McKenna Wireman, a first-generation college student from Dwale, Kentucky, is preparing to graduate from Alice Lloyd College with a degree in Biology – Pre-Medicine. Her journey to Purpose Road began with a recommendation from her grandmother, and from the moment she stepped onto campus for a tour, McKenna knew ALC was where she belonged.
From a young age, McKenna aspired to become a doctor, driven by a deep desire to help others. Her academic performance at ALC reflects that determination. As a Presidential Scholar, she has earned a place on both the President’s List and Dean’s List multiple times, demonstrating her commitment to excellence.
Beyond the classroom, McKenna is a standout athlete on the College’s archery team. She holds the school record in women’s compound archery and has medaled in several tournaments. Her love for the sport began in middle school, and when ALC introduced its archery program two years ago, she was among the first to join. She considers training and competing with her teammates a highlight of her college experience.
McKenna also serves as a teacher’s assistant for Dr. Janelle Pryor through the student work program, assisting with laboratory preparation, exam proctoring, and general classroom support. She credits this hands-on experience with enriching her scientific knowledge and preparing her for her future career.
Outside of academics and athletics, McKenna is deeply committed to community service. As a member of the Prestonsburg Church of Christ, she participates in monthly service projects such as delivering quilts to nursing homes, preparing meals for the homebound, and assembling care packages for first responders. She also enjoys taking part in campus-wide initiatives organized by student government, like food drives and service events.
Following graduation, McKenna plans to shadow healthcare professionals at a local hospital as she prepares to apply to medical school. Her goal is to become a dermatologist. She hopes to be selected for the Gatton Winston Scholars Program, which provides financial support to ALC graduates pursuing advanced degrees.
Among her favorite classes at ALC is Anatomy and Physiology with Dr. Pryor, where she enjoyed engaging labs and dissections. She values the small class sizes and the close-knit relationships she has built with faculty. “At ALC, I’m not just a number. My professors know my name and always greet me around campus,” she shares.
Some of McKenna’s most cherished memories include snowball fights and sledding during the snowstorm of 2024, and relaxing or studying with friends in the Perry Campus Center—her favorite hangout spot.
Reflecting on her time at ALC, McKenna expresses gratitude for the debt-free education and the strong foundation the College has provided. “Alice Lloyd College has given me the tools I need to succeed, and it’s inspired me to continue serving others,” she says. With a heart for service and a bright future ahead, McKenna Wireman represents the very best of what it means to walk Purpose Road.
