Gulf Shores, Al: Alice Lloyd College Eagle star runner Ryan Morris traveled to Gulf Shores Alabama on May 27th to participate in the NAIA Outdoor Track and Field National Championships in the ultra-challenging Marathon event.

In order to qualify for nationals, a runner had to hit a difficult acceptable time in either a sanctioned full or half-marathon. Morris punched his ticket on March 19th as he won the Skidaway Island Marathon in Savannah, Georgia. During that race, in a field of over 200 runners, the senior finished the 26.2-mile race in a time of 2:47:08, earning him first place overall. That averaged out to an impressive 6:18 pace. His winning time was actually one of the fastest marathons run by any NAIA runner this season, and he looked to enter the nationals as a strong contender.

Unfortunately, in Gulf Shores, due to the humid temperatures, the race officials chose to shorten the race down to a half-marathon. Even though the distance was sliced to 13.1 miles, Morris had trained differently preparing for a course twice that distance. Additionally, many of his opponents had qualified in the half-marathon and had more preparation for the shorter distance. Largely due to this, the Eagle was seeded 50th out of the 51 individuals to toe the line.

However, the determined Eagle ignored the official predictions and ran a fabulous race. When the competition was over, Morris ended up with an impressive time of 1:14.50 (5:40 pace), good enough for 25th Place. In fact, he only missed cracking the top 10 by less than 1:30. It was a fitting way for the speedster to end his ALC career.

Morris finished as a three-time NCCAA DII All-American. In addition to becoming the first track and field athlete in school history to qualify for the NAIA Nationals, he also qualified for and ran in both the NAIA Men’s Cross-Country Championship and the NCCAA DII Cross Country Championship. Additionally, he holds the 8K school-record time of 26:04, was named NCCAA DII Men’s Cross-Country National Student-Athlete of the Week and has been named by the River States Conference as Cross-Country Runner-of-the Week and Track Athlete of the Week.

In 2021, he was chosen by the RSC conference as the male recipient of the Bill Melton River States Conference Champion of Character Award. He was also selected as the Alice Lloyd College Cross-Country Champion of Character winner. Morris graduated from Alice Lloyd on May 7th and was voted the recipient of the Men’s Scholar-Athlete award. He will return to his alma mater to work.

The post ALC Marathoner Ryan Morris Participates in NAIA National Track and Field Championships first appeared on Alice Lloyd College.

Five ALC athletes earned their way to the most prestigious event of the NCCAA season. 23 women’s and 23 men’s squads were determined to give their best effort in the huge meet. The ALC men would finish in 19th position overall.

In women’s action, Riley Scheck competed in the Javelin throw. Out of 23 participants, her toss of 31.36M earned her an 11th-place finish. She has been impressive all season.

Hurdler Sarah Cecil came in 11th in the 100M hurdles in 16:60 seconds (new ALC record) out of 21 finalists. She was also 13th in the 400M Hurdles with a time of 1:13.49 out of 16 finalists. Cecil’s times improved every race.

On the men’s side of things, Dakota Owens came up huge. He finished in 3rd place out of 15 finalists in the 400M Dash with a time of 49:42. This impressive showing earned him a spot on the podium and made him the first track and field athlete to medal at nationals in school history. In addition, Owens finished 12th out of 32 finalists in the 200M Dash with a time of 21:93. He has had a spectacular season.

In the High Jump, Gerald Bentley soared to a height of 1.85M to tie for 11th position in his first nationals. The youngster has shown great promise.

Also, in his first nationals, Nick Chasteen finished 23rd out of 35 competitors in the 100M Dash with a solid time of 11:18 (a new ALC record). He was only off the finals qualifying time by .38 seconds and has his best days ahead of him. Both Bentley and Chasteen accomplished great things this season and look to make even bigger gains next year.

Track and Field season had ended for all but one athlete, as senior Ryan Morris qualified in April for the NAIA National Track and Field Championship in the Marathon run (which is why he did not compete in Greenville). Morris, who holds every school’s distance-running record, will compete on May 27th in Gulf Shores, Alabama, in that ultra-challenging event.

The post Alice Lloyd Eagles Track and Field Concludes Season in NCCAA National Championships first appeared on Alice Lloyd College.

Grayson, KY: The #4 seeded Alice Lloyd Eagles baseball team (9-41) concluded the season in the Mideast Regional Tournament as they journeyed to Grayson, Kentucky for the NCCAA Mideast Region Tournament. The winner of the double-elimination tournament will advance to the NCCAA Baseball World Series later in the month.

After the dust had settled, ALC would drop their two contests against the #1 seeded Oakland City University Oaks and the #3 seeded Kentucky Christian University Knights.

May 10

Game 1: ALC-4; OCU-18

Oakland City (38-21) spread out 17 runs over the first five innings to take the opener.

OCU got on the scoreboard right out of the gate as their leadoff batter homered (1-0). In the second, they would add 2 scores on 2 doubles and a single (3-0).

The Oaks unloaded in the third and fourth. In the third, two more doubles were sandwiched around a pair of singles and produced 5 big runs (8-0). In the very next inning, they repeated themselves spacing out 3 more hits to plate 5 more (13-0).

ALC would be held to just 3 hits during the first five innings. In the bottom of the fifth, OCU rapped 5 more hits, including two more doubles, which enabled 4 runners to reach home (17-0).

The Eagles would finally answer in their next at bat as a two-out double from Noah Dingess (LF) and 2 singles would lead to a burst of 3 runs (17-3). However, with the bases loaded, and a chance to eat deeper into the deficit, the next batter flied out to deep left field.

The Indiana squad would gain 1 run back in their half of the sixth with another double (18-3). The scoring then ended in the seventh when the Caney Creek crew used 2 singles to produce a run (18-4), but they would get no closer.

At the plate, Dingess went 3-4 with 2 RBI’s, while Peyton Brown (1B) added 2 hits.

On the mound, pitcher Peyton Branham started and took the loss. He allowed 6 hits and 6 earned runs in 2.1 innings. Dawson Beckett and Ryan Cozart both tossed in relief, but had a tough go of things as well.

ALC was outhit 17-8 and committed 1 error.

May 11

Game 2: ALC-5; KCU-10

The Eagles saw their season come to an end at the hands of KCU (28-27) despite winning the hitting battle on the day.

ALC would strike quickly in their first at bat, utilizing an RBI single from Dingess to leap ahead (1-0). However, the Knights would respond with 3 runs in their first-at-bat, and hold a 3-1 advantage.

In the second, the Eagles would gain 1 run back when Wyatt Crisp (C) drove a pitch over the left field wall (3-2).

Unfortunately, KCU would respond as they scored 3,2, and 2 runs in innings four through six. This would enable them to enter the top of the seventh holding a 10-2 cushion.

The Caney Creek crew would look to rally in the seventh. In that inning, with two men on base, TJ Mullins uncorked a solid 3-run wallop, and made the score 10-5. However, the comeback would fizzle.

From that point, the home club settled down and allowed no more Eagle runs to score, as the Pippa Passes team saw their season come to an end.

At the plate, Crisp finished 3-4, while Mullins and Brown both rapped 2 hits apiece. Mullins provided 3 RBI’s.

On the mound, Chase Conley opened the game and allowed 3 hits and 3 earned runs in 1 inning. Will Gladson, Alex Acey. and DJ Goodin all pitched in relief.

ALC actually won the hitting battle 11-9, and committed just 1 error compared to KCU’s 3. However, they hurt themselves by leaving 11 runners stranded on base.

The Eagles will graduate seniors, Wyatt Crisp, Jake Moran, Chase Madden, Zach Rose, Peyton Brown, and manager Kameron Adams, but Coach Scott Cornett returns everyone else from a relatively young team.

The post Alice Lloyd Eagles Baseball Concludes Season in Mideast Regional Tournament first appeared on Alice Lloyd College.

The Alice Lloyd Eagles baseball team (9-40) concluded the regular portion of their season by playing five games over three days: two at home with both Brescia University (KY) and Miami Hamilton (OH), and one at Bluefield State (WV).

April 29
Game 1
ALC-3; BU-14

The visitors spread out 11 runs over the final three innings to take the opener.

BU got on the scoreboard in the second inning when a triple and double led to 3 scores (3-0).

ALC would answer in their next at-bat as a solid double from Caleb Justice (SS) and a balk drove in a run (3-1).

In the Bearcat fifth, 3 hits produced 4 runs (7-1) and they followed that up with a big 6-run sixth, to pull away, 13-1. In the seventh, a solo blast plated their final score (14-1).

Alice Lloyd would score in their last chance when Jacob Lovell (DH) drove a fastball out of the park for 2 runs (14-3). Unfortunately, that was as close as the hosts could get.

At the plate, TJay Mullins (3B) went 2-3 while Lovell produced 2 RBIs.

On the mound, pitcher Peyton Branham started and took the loss. He allowed 7 hits and 7 earned runs in 4.2 innings while whiffing 3 batters. Mason Bryant and Jacob Frye both threw in relief.

ALC was outhit 15-6 and committed 2 errors.

Game 2
ALC-5; BU-8

The Bearcats broke away from a tie at the end to earn the sweep.

BU opened the scoring in the second as 2 hits led to 3 runs (3-0) The. Pippa Passes crew earned 1 run back when Noah Dingess (LF) opened things with a solo shot over the right-field wall (3-1).

In the third, Brescia smacked a homer to gain back the momentum (5-1), and things remained the same until the bottom of the fifth.

The fifth would prove fruitful to the hometown boys. After loading the bases, TJay Mullins promptly cleared them with a mammoth shot to center field. Just like that, the contest was knotted at 5-5.

BU earned 2 runs in the top of the sixth (7-5) but went down with the bases still loaded. However, ALC was unable to capitalize in their next at-bat despite putting the leadoff hitter on base.

In the seventh, a solo blast provided BU with some insurance (8-5). Down to their final opportunity, ALC would go down in order.

On the day, Mullins and Caleb Horton (2B) would both rap 2 hits while Mullins provided 4 huge RBIs.

Dawson Beckett started, allowing 12 hits and 7 runs over 5.2 innings, with 4 K’s. Alex Acey suffered the defeat in relief as he allowed just 1 hit and 1 run over 1.1 innings.

The Eagles finished with 8 hits, compared to the visitors’ 13.

April 30
Game 1
ALC-6; MH-5

A walk-off single gave the Eagles the thrilling series-opening victory.

ALC would strike quickly in their first at-bat, utilizing a walk, steal, and single to plate a run (1-0).

However, in the second, 3 gift errors from the hosts handed the Harriers 2 runs right back (2-1). MH would repeat the same scoring in the fourth, by virtue of 3 hits (4-1).

In the bottom of the inning, Dingess would stroke a solo shot to the left that produced a needed run (4-2).

The Eagles would then tie things once more in the sixth when Mullins uncorked a mighty 2-run wallop (4-4).

The Ohio club would produce a single run in the seventh aided by another ALC error (5-4), only to see the Caney Creek Club’s Mullins come through in the clutch with a 2-out, RBI single (5-5).

In extra innings, the Harriers had a man on second but saw their final two batters ground out to end their opportunity.

In the Bluegrass boys’ portion of the eighth, Peyton Brown (1B) led off with a double and was later sacrificed to third. Eventually, with 2 outs, Kamden Powell showed true grit as he lined a single to center to bring in the game-winner and chalk up the victory in the Eagles’ column.

At the plate, Mullins continued his steady play going 3-3 with 3 RBIs. Brown and Powell would produce 2 hits apiece.

Chase Conley went the distance and snagged the win. He allowed 7 hits and just 2 earned runs in 8 innings, ALC won the hitting battle 10-5 and overcame 4 critical errors.

Game 2
ALC-8; MH-5

A massive six-run inning proved to be enough to lead ALC to the nice sweep.

The Pippa Passes crew would attack viciously in the second, as 8 big hits, capped off by a Kason Hofsess 3-run blast to left, produced 6 scores (6-0).

After Hamilton earned 1 run back in the third (6-1), the Eagles promptly produced 2 of their own when Dingess would stroke a 2-run shot to left (8-1).

The Ohio squad would make things shaky in the sixth when they rode 4 hits, including a bomb of their own, to plate 4 scores (8-5). However, after a leadoff double in the seventh, their next three batters went down harmlessly to conclude the action.

At the plate, Hofsess went 3-4 with 3 RBI’s while Dingess and Isaiah Beckett (LF) added 2 hits apiece.

Will Gladson went the distance and snagged the win. He allowed 9 hits and 5 earned runs in 7 innings.

ALC won the hitting battle 12-9.

May 1
ALC-8; BSU-10

The Eagles made a gallant comeback before fading late in a single nine-inning contest against the NCAA DII squad.

BSU opened the scoring out of the gate as 4 hits led to 3 runs (3-0) The. Pippa Passes crew earned 2 runs back when Hofsess tripled in two scores (3-2).

In the fourth, ALC would tie things after Dingess doubled and scored on Wyatt Crisp’s (C) single (3-3).

Bluefield would squeak ahead on a double in their half of the inning (4-3), but they would apply real pressure in the fifth.

The fifth would see the Big Blues use a double to plate 3 runs and pump up the advantage (7-3).

Fortunately, in the seventh, three well-placed singles would allow the Caney Creek boys to earn 2 runs back (7-5).

However, the Mountaineer club would use 2 giant doubles in the eighth to seize momentum once again, and leap ahead, 10-5.

Down to their final at-bat, Alice Lloyd made things interesting as they used 3 singles and a Hofsess double to slice the deficit to just two (10-8). Disappointingly, with the go-ahead run at the plate, the final Eagle batter would go down on strikes.

On the day, Hofsess and Crisp would both bang 3 hits while Mullins and Nick Vankeuren (RF) provided 2 each. Cannon Ferrell (CF) contributed 3 nice RBIs.

Ryan Cozart started, allowing 11 hits and 4 earned runs over 6 innings, with 6 K’s Alex Acey pitched the final two innings and added 3 more strike-outs to the total.

The Eagles finished with 13 hits, compared to the visitors with 14.

3 errors by the visitors proved costly.

The post Alice Lloyd Eagles Baseball Concludes Regular Season first appeared on Alice Lloyd College.

Berea, KY: The Alice Lloyd College Eagles baseball team (7-36) traveled to Central Kentucky on April 26th to play the Berea College Mountaineers (5-30) in a single game contest. In nine innings, the hosts prevailed, 9-6.

ALC struck in the first inning. Cannon Ferrell (CF) walked, advanced to third on a hit from Noah Dingess (LF), and later scored on a sacrifice fly from TJay Mullins (3B), to jump ahead, 1-0.

Unfortunately, BC utilized 4 hits and 2 crucial errors to score 4 in the bottom half (4-1). They would then add a two-run home run in the second to lead 6-1.
