On Wednesday, November 8th, Alice Lloyd College celebrated the seventh annual National First-Generation College Student Day. The day recognizes students whose parents did not complete a four-year degree.
When Mrs. Lloyd and Miss June began Caney Junior College, they desired to bring education to the mountains. Over 100 years later, ALC continues providing opportunities for young people to be the first in their families to earn a college degree. This academic year, 44% of the student body is considered first-generation. These individuals consistently display traits like courage, motivation, and confidence as they push toward their goals. We are proud of all of their accomplishments.
Along with currently enrolled first-gen students, many faculty and staff members are also the first in their families to graduate with a four-year degree. Provost and Academic Dean Charles Marshall is one of those, having received his bachelor’s degree at Alice Lloyd College. “As a first-generation college student myself, I am incredibly proud of our first-generation students at Alice Lloyd College,” said Dr. Marshall. “They are a dedicated and determined group who care deeply about their future. They truly are the future leaders of Appalachia.”
Alice Lloyd College is grateful for the support of friends and donors across the country who allow us to provide the opportunity for so many young people to reach this milestone.
