Shuling Fister

Alice Lloyd’s Caney Convocation Series is pleased to welcome Shuling Fister, a Chinese dance choreographer and performer. Fister will perform for our students on Thursday, March 20th at 1 PM in the Campbell Arts Center.

Fister grew up in China and has had a passion for dance all of her life. She received her dance training from professional instructors in her homeland. She continues her dance development by traveling to China and working with top-level choreographers and dance instructors.

Fister primarily performs Chinese classical and folk dances. Chinese classical dance has roots that date back over 5,000 years and requires strict, systematic physical training to emphasize the inner meaning and texture of the theme. Sometimes, Chinese classical dance is referred to as Chinese ballet. Folk dances are drawn from 56 ethnic groups in China, each with its own unique folk dance traditions. These folk dances are typically associated with the harvest, weddings, festivals and other themes. Props like bright-colored fans, handkerchiefs, umbrellas, drums and ribbons are sometimes used in the folk dances.

Fister has performed at the University of Kentucky Singletary Center for the Arts, Lexington Public Library, Lexmark, Louisville’s Brown Theatre, and for events like Chinese New Year Celebrations, the Georgetown Kite Festival, Lexington Mayfest, and school cultural exchange programs across Kentucky. She has been offering dance lessons to children and adults since 2004.
