The Alice Lloyd College men’s basketball program, under the direction of head coach J. R. Hammond, has announced the signing of Harlan County High School’s Alex Sergent to an athletic letter of intent for the 2013-14 season. Coach Hammond made the trip to Baxter, KY on Thursday, April 25th, and was proud to return to Pippa Passes with the signature of the versatile Black Bears guard.

“This kid is an excellent shooter,” said Coach Hammond, “and, with his ball-handling skills and great ability to penetrate, I know he’ll be a perfect fit in our dribble drive offense.”

Knowing that senior point guard Isaac Wilson will be lost to graduation after the 2013-14 season, Hammond was on the hunt for fresh new talent capable of running the team’s offense. The 6’0″ Sergent was the coach’s target player, even though he spent most of his time on the wing in high school.

“Alex has the leadership skills that I’ve been looking for,” Hammond continued. “He’s been a starter all four years and was a huge factor in his team making a run to the 13th Region championship game. His teammates really fed off of his energy.”

“After visiting us,” the coach concluded, “he already has good chemistry with our other players.”

Along with shepherding the Black Bears to the 13th Region title match-up with Clay County, Sergent guided Harlan High to its first-ever 52nd District championship in 2010. He averaged in double figures throughout the last three seasons, scoring 14 points per game, and was placed on the school’s 1,000 Point Club.

Upon being asked his reason for choosing Alice Lloyd, Sergent said, “I just fell in love with the environment.”

He was also pleased to find that his friend, Barbourville guard Devon Mills, had also recently committed to play for the Eagles.

While at ALC, Sergent plans to study in the College’s excellent Teacher Education Program. His goals are to one day teach history and coach.

Alice Lloyd College Athletics and Athletic Director Gary Stepp are pleased to welcome Alex Sergent as a new Eagle in Pippa Passes.
