The June Buchanan School’s students are often portrayed as leaders, and last week, the senior class, accompanied by history instructor Larry Hayes and Dean Amanda Clark, traveled to Lexington, KY for a highly instructive, one-day leadership event called the Get Motivated Seminar. “Sending our seniors to listen to these great people talk about motivation and leadership is our JBS commitment to Alice Lloyd’s philosophy,” Mr. Hayes explained. “We believe in our students and want them to be exposed to the best leaders America has to offer as we expect them to take on leadership roles here in their own communities.” Ranging from CEOs to politicians, athletes to generals, this seminar was a great experience for the seniors, inspiring them to think about their futures and to be ambitious about the plans they have for their lives.

Students were privileged to hear such prestigious speakers as Rick Belluzzo (President of Microsoft), Mary Buffett (internationally-acclaimed investing expert), Laura Bush (former First Lady), Steve Forbes (Chairman of Forbes Media), Rudy Giuliani (former mayor of New York City, dubbed “America’s Mayor”), Lou Holtz (renowned Notre Dame Head Coach), John Calipari (UK Basketball Head Coach), and Colin Powell (former Secretary of State and a retired four-star general). JBS senior Ashli Sexton commented on her experience at the seminar, saying, “I learned how to be strategically successful, how to invest not only my time but also my money, how to be a true leader, but most importantly, how to live out my dream.”

JBS students encounter a special atmosphere while attending high school on the campus of Alice Lloyd College, one that creates a unity of philosophy between the institutions — a philosophy built upon founder Alice Lloyd’s belief that “the leaders are here.” JBS faculty and staff unite to provide leadership opportunities through curriculum, community service, extracurricular activities, and travel to special events like the Get Motivated Business Seminar.
